The backdrop for the class of 1964 was beginning to be the Vietnam War. Like most wars, the dividing line was clear. You were in the military, taking the full brunt of American defense, or you were not, and but for the news you had no real reason to even think there was a war. But in fact the war was beginning to interrupt more and more lives.
Otherwise, the US economy was strong, and life for those on the home front was good.
